- Millions Against Monsanto - Monsanto is one of the most aggressive biotech companies, marketing "Roundup Ready" genetically engineered plants. They have been a bane of smaller farmers, aggressively pursuing alleged infringers of their GMO patents. While their main patent is about to expire, they may be able to non-legally extend effective patent protection. And the Obama Administration appears to be very Monsanto-sympathetic. At least one judge, however, has ordered Monsanto to pull up a number of fields of GMO sugar beets, citing the possibility of cross-contamination with non-Monsanto crops (essentially converting non-infringing subject matter into infringing subject matter).
- House Republicans remove "Organic" from name of subcommittee charged with overseeing organics. Jean Schmidt has been named Chair - she's a piece of work. Don't expect much for organics out of that committee.
